Freestyle Coaching Sessions - COMPLETED

YCKC was proud to host Zach Zwanenburg in Whitehorse Wednesday Sept 14 to Saturday Sept 24 for a series of Whitewater Freestyle Clinics and coaching.

Zach is from Cornwall, Quebec and is member of Team Canada Whitewater Freestyle Team in the following classes: Kayak, C-1, and Open Canoe.  Zach qualified for all 3 spots at the team trials this last August. He is the first Canadian to ever qualify in all 3 disciplines.

Zach was a bronze medal winner for Team Canada at the 2015 World Freestyle Championships in C-1 just 2 spots back from legendary Dane Jackson.  Zach has competed in several International Level Freestyle and Slalom competitions around the globe, and was a member of the Junior Canadian Slalom Team for 3 years  in kayak and C-1 and had been Canadian Junior Champion in C-1 and C-2.  He has worked with numerous coaches over the past several years including Billy Harris.

There was 2-3 sessions available on most of the days including flatwater and at the Spin Wave. Our goal was to try to keep coaching groups small so you get lots of personal attention.

Wednesday Sept 14th was the  meet and greet drop in and play, intended for Zach to get to know the wave and the people.

Cost: $50 for youth  and $75 for adults which gets you minimum of 6 sessions. Participants should be able to roll and be comfortable in the spin wave.  Thank you to Trevor Braun for making this opportunity happen.

Support for these clinics thanks to Yukon Sport and Rec- YRAC and Yukon Sport for Life funding and Lotteries Yukon.

Adult Whitewater Kayak Drop ins (over for 2016)
Adult Kayaking with YCKC ran on Tuesday's AFTER the long weekend, May 24th, 6:30 at the intake until August 30th.
Don't be late as we head up to the dam by 7pm. You should have a base knowledge of whitewater kayaking: wet exits, boat setup and some river experience. Best way to get that is to take a lesson, then come join us for the season. YCKC Membership is required and with that membership, club gear is available for use at these evening drop ins. Adult Whitewater Open Canoe Drop ins (over for 2016)

Every Tuesday from 6:30 till 9:00 (or so) open canoeists were encouraged to paddle Class I and II white water along the millennium trail on a drop in basis.

We met at the Rotary’s (blue) walking bridge on the Riverdale side of the millennium trail. It’s a great chance to get out and play / practice, pick up tips, renew old paddling friendships, pick up new friendships and build out your network of paddlers. The water is forgiving, but it’s cold.

Who Can Attend?

You should be a YCKC member, if you’re not its only $20 for individuals and $40 for a family. Tandem and solo boats are welcome; expect a healthy mix of both.  You must have basic white water experience. The sessions are aimed at adults, but if you have questions just call Ed.

What do you need?

Canoe, full safety gear is required (helmets, dry suites, PFD floatation, throw bags etc.).
